Blessing Okagbare ends Nigeria's 12 year wait for World Championship medal

Blessing Okagbare became the first Nigerian athlete in twelve years to win a medal at the World Athletics Championship. On Sunday evening of 11th August, she leapt a distance of 6.99m to win a Silver medal narrowly losing the Gold medal to Olympic champion Britney Reece by.02m. The American jumped 7.01m on her second jump to clinch the title.

Ironically, Britney Reece almost did not qualify for the final when she placed last in the qualifiers but she managed to raise her game when it mattered.

The Silver medal by Okagbare ends Nigeria's long wait for a medal at the World Championships. The last time Nigeria won a medal was in Seville 1999 when the duo of Francis Obikwelu and Gloria Alozie won silver medal in the 200m and 110m hurdles respectively.

Hopefully Okagbare can go one better in the 100m scheduled for Monday. Go girl....
