Andy Murray: 77 year wait ended on 7:7

Andy Murray finally broke the Wimbledon jinx that has seen no British Tennis player win the trophy for 77 years. And how ironic that this was done on 7th July, a day sadly remembered and known as 7/7 for the London Train bombing that claimed many lives in 2005.

Murray played the match of his life to beat world No1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 in a very thrilling match that truly lived up to its billing. The straight sets victory isn't really a true reflection of the match as it was never a one-sided encounter as the result made it look. Both players gave it everything they had. They traded ground strokes like two boxers fighting toe to toe, displayed great athleticism with some lung-bursting rallies that were averaging 20 shots or more.

Now with Federer's career going slightly downhill, and Nadal's injury problems, this could be the next Tennis rivalry for years to come. Murray has emphatically announced with this performance that he's got few Grand Slams in him and this is good news to the Tennis community, tired of seeing only Nadal, Fed or Djokovic in finals.

Just as Murray said that he had no idea of what had happened when the match was over, he probably also has no idea of the gloom he lifted off British Tennis and even more importantly, the country as a whole, on a day usually dominated by the unfortunate incident of 2005. Murray's win is a National victory that will perhaps just put a little smile on people's faces each year the date 7/7 comes up again.
